Making Cookies

June 21, 2021

You may have seen the film Stranger Than Fiction where life of Harold Crick, played by Will Ferrell, is directed by author Karen Eiffel, played by my favorite actress of all time, Emma Thompson. The movie centers around Eiffel’s writer’s block as her main characters die at the end of her stories and she has no idea how to kill Crick. Funny and poignant, with Queen Latifah and Dustin Hoffman playing supporting roles, Stranger Than Fiction is one of my favorite films.

As I watched it last evening, I was reminded that the lead baker, Ana Pascal, played by the lovely Maggie Gyllenhaal, was in law school when she decided to drop out and make the world a better place by making cookies.

The line that absorbs me is when she says: “and a D average…”

I wish I had had a D average. I might have dropped the whole lawyer plan long ago instead of spending 20 miserable years writing briefs and contracts instead of novels and taking abuses from judges instead of taking photos…

“If I was going to make the world a better place, I would do it with cookies.”

I get it.

(Those are my macarons, by the way. People I love get those…and caramels…for Christmas.)
